Patients and especially children suffer from complete social isolation in Africa because disfigurement is related to spiritual issues. Much of this can be resolved with education. The only types of NPO’s at this stage in Africa which address this offer surgery to patients who qualify.
Patients have formed online communities globally to debate the empowerment issue so that more diversity inclusion awareness is encouraged. The fashion and media industry could play a major role in changing this prejudiced mindset. Many fashion companies and magazines have already initiated such campaigns.
